A Wedding Ceremony Created in 24 Hours

Real Ceremonies — Real Solutions: How I Helped Couples

A wedding dinner is booked. Guests are on their way. A couple ready to celebrate their wedding. Then a January storm closed the local registry office.

With less than 24 hours to go, and an overnight storm, a young couple found their planned registry office legal wedding ceremony cancelled. Family expected to join them for wedding celebrations that had been booked for the following day at The Ashe Hotel in Tralee.

Facing into the fact that they would not be able to complete the legal side of their marriage that day — we all had to think fast — the day itself must not be ost!

Creating a Ceremony at Short Notice

I was contacted by staff at The Ashe Hotel to ask if I could create and conduct a last minute symbolic wedding ceremony.

There was no time for weeks of planning or several meetings. I needed to quickly understand who this young couple were, what the day meant to them and the kind of ceremony that would be meaningful for their family.

Within 24 hours, I put together a personal ceremony that gave them the opportunity to exchange vows, celebrate their relationship and mark the occasion they were looking forward to.

A Wedding Day Worth Remembering

Surrounded by their family at The Ashe Hotel, the couple had a warm and meaningful ceremony before continuing with their planned meal and celebrations.

It was not the wedding day they had expected—but it was still a day filled with love, laughter and the people who mattered to them.

What Is a Symbolic Wedding Ceremony?

A symbolic ceremony is not legally binding, but includes many of the moments couples associate with their wedding day, including:

  • Personal vows
  • An exchange of rings
  • Readings and music
  • Family involvement
  • The couple’s story
  • Symbolic rituals

It can be created at short notice when unexpected circumstances disrupt a legal ceremony. Symbolic ceremonies are also popular with overseas couples who complete the legal formalities in their home country before celebrating their wedding in Ireland.

When Plans Change, the Day Can Still Matter

Storms, travel disruption and unexpected closures are outside a couple’s control. What matters is how we respond.

In this case, a symbolic ceremony allowed this couple to gather with their family, continue with the plans they had made and enjoy their intended celebrations.
