When a Family Priest Made the Ceremony Even More Personal
REAL CEREMONIES, REAL SOLUTIONS
Every couple brings different relationships, beliefs and family traditions to their wedding ceremony. My role is to find a way of including the people and elements that matter to them so that everything feels natural and belongs within the ceremony.
For one couple, that meant making space for a priest who was both a close friend of the bride’s family and someone who had known her since she was a child.
What the Couple Wanted
The bride and groom wanted him to contribute to their celebrant-led ceremony, but not necessarily to read a prayer or traditional blessing.
The solution was simple: we created a natural moment in the ceremony for him to come forward, and leaving what he said entirely up to him.
A Contribution Nobody Else Could Have Made
When the moment came, the priest spoke very softly about his relationship with the family and about having known the bride since childhood.
His words were personal, beautiful and very moving. Rather than feeling like a separate addition to the ceremony, his contribution added another part of the bride’s story — one that only he could tell.
He was not there simply in his role as a priest; he was also there as a family friend speaking about someone he had watched grow into the woman standing before us on her wedding day.
Bringing Religious and Personal Elements Together
Couples sometimes wonder whether a priest, minister or religious family friend can contribute to a celebrant-led ceremony.
They can — and the contribution does not necessarily have to take the form of a prayer or blessing. It might be a personal reflection, a few words about the couple or an acknowledgement of the family and the history they share.
The important thing is to give the contribution a clear and comfortable place within the ceremony.
In this case, that freedom created a moment that was completely unique to the couple and their family.
Afterwards, the priest came over to speak with me about the ceremony. Our quiet conversation stayed with me, just as his contribution did. It was a lovely example of how different traditions and relationships can come together respectfully within one ceremony.
If there is someone you would like to include in your ceremony —whether for religious, cultural or personal reasons — I can help you find a way for this contribution to feel intended, meaningful and hold a special place within the day.
