What If We’re Not Romantic?

One of the things I've been hearing from couples recently is: "We're really not romantic people."

Or perhaps: "We're quite private."

"We're not very good at talking about our feelings."

"The thought of everyone staring at us while we pour our hearts out is our worst nightmare!"

If you've ever had those thoughts, I promise you're not alone. In fact, some of the most memorable ceremonies I've ever had the privilege of creating have been for couples who described themselves exactly this way.

There Is No Right Way to Be in Love

Some couples wear their hearts on their sleeves. They write pages of heartfelt vows, cry through every word and happily tell everyone exactly how they feel.

Others don't.

Some show love by making each other a cup of tea every morning. By remembering how the other takes their coffee. By walking the dog together after work. By quietly supporting one another through life's difficult moments. By making each other laugh until they can't breathe.

None of those are more or less romantic. They're simply different expressions of love.

Your ceremony shouldn't try to turn you into someone you're not. It should feel like you.

You Don't Have to Perform

One of the biggest worries couples share is that they'll be expected to stand in front of all their family and friends and hear an emotional speech about one another.

Not if you don't want to!

My role is to tell your story in a way that feels natural, comfortable and authentic. I'll do the talking so you can simply enjoy the moment together.

If there are things you'd rather keep to yourselves, that's absolutely fine. Not every story needs to be shared.

Personal Doesn't Mean Private

People often think a personalised ceremony means revealing intimate details about your relationship.

It doesn't.

Personal means that your guests recognise you in the words they're hearing.

It might be the story of how you met. The hobby you both love. The holiday where everything went wrong but you still laugh about it years later. The fact that you're both happiest on a quiet Sunday with a takeaway and a good film.

Sometimes it's these ordinary moments that say the most about who you are together. Or you can choose to leave them out altogether.

There's No Pressure to Be Emotional

Some people cry. Some laugh. Some smile all the way through.

Some are simply concentrating so hard on remembering their vows that they don't show much emotion at all.

Every reaction is perfectly normal.

There is no expectation that you have to cry, make grand declarations or deliver dramatic speeches. The best ceremonies aren't remembered because someone cried the hardest.

They're remembered because they felt genuine.

We Work Together

When we create your ceremony, we do it together.

I'll ask questions, get to know you both and discover what makes your relationship unique.

If something feels too personal, we simply don't include it.

If there's a funny story you'd rather keep between yourselves, we'll find another one.

If you'd rather focus on your journey together than your emotions, we can do exactly that.

There are no rules.

Your Guests Already Know You

This is something I often remind couples.

Your family and friends already know you're not overly romantic. They know you're private. They know your personalities.

So when your ceremony reflects who you really are, it feels genuine. Your guests won't be wondering why you didn't make a grand romantic speech. They'll be smiling because they'll recognise the two people standing in front of them. And that's exactly how it should be.

The Most Beautiful Ceremonies Feel Honest

At the heart of every ceremony I write is one simple goal: to make it feel like you.

Not the version you think weddings are supposed to look like.

Whether that's full of laughter, quiet affection, gentle humour or understated emotion, your ceremony should celebrate your relationship in a way that feels comfortable from beginning to end.

Because the most meaningful ceremonies aren't the most dramatic. They're the ones where everyone leaves thinking, "That was so them."
